The Mage
He calls to it. It startles and stands.
What stands? The Other; all that he is not
becomes a being. And the whole being turns
a quickly-fashioned face hence, that's more.
Oh mage, endure, endure, endure!
Make balance. Stand still upon the scales,
that they might bear on one side you and the house,
and on the other side, what's grown great there.
The decision is reached. The binding is bound.
He knows the summons outweighed the rebuff.
But his face, as with overlapping hands,
reads midnight. He as well is bound.
Rainer Maria Rilke, 1875-1926
